Shifts

(1988)

This work is in eight parts whereby each instrumental voice plays in a different meter. Since the different meters relate to each other as simple integers (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9), the voices will be together for the first note and then once again on the smallest common multiple of the integers, which also coincides with the end of the piece: in this case, it is after 2520 beats or (2^3)*(3^2)*(5^1)*(7^1).

This piece can be performed by a chamber ensemble from a computer-generated score, or as in the case of this present recording, it can be generated in real-time by computer with which a single performer can directly interact.

A version for percussion sounds was released on the Logos Works CD, published by the Experimental Intermedia Foundation, New York. (CD nr. XI117). It was recorded by the author in the Logos Tetrahedron, 1994.

A version using all the robots of the logos <M&M> ensemble in combination with some live musicians was realised and premiered in august 2002. The orchestration of this version is year after year updated as more robots come to join the Logos Robot Orchestra.

Playing and performance instructions can be found in shifts.html. The score can be freely downloaded. The PC software used to generate the piece -also required for performers wanting to play together with the computer- is available on request.
