Syntax for looking up instrumentation

Instruments are stored in the database per group in a format like 3.2.1.0, which in the case for strings would mean: 3 violins, 2 viola's, 1 cello and no double bass. You can fill in the search field like this, but you also have the following extra options:

• '*' if you don't care how many (including none at all) instruments of a specific kind are included
• '[m-n]': where 'm' and 'n' should be replaced by numbers between 0 and 9, to look up entries with m to n parts for the specific instrument. In case you want to look for more then 9 instances of the same instrument, use * in stead.

If you fill in nothing for a certain instrument group, the presence or absence of instruments from this group will not be considered in your search.

There is also a text field where you can search for instruments that are not included in the general classification. You can also try normal instruments in the text field, but for older entries they will not show up because only the systematical classification was filled in.

Some examples:

• if you fill in [1-9].0.0.0 for woods, you will find all entries with 1 to 9 flutes and no other wood instruments.
• 1.*.*.* for brass will find all entries with a trumpet and any number (including none) of the other instruments.
• *.*.*.* for strings will find all entries with any combination of string instruments.
• 0.0.0.0 for strings will find only pieces without any string instruments
