Biografie (Nederlands)

Helen White werd in 1977 in Kidderminster, England geboren en woont sinds 2000 in Gent. Ze studeerde Frans, Duits en Nederlands aan de Universiteit van Sheffield en verhuisde in 2000 naar België, oorspronkelijk om Engelse spreekvaardigheid te geven aan de Mercator Hogeschool. In 2004 haalde zij haar Masters na Masters in de Literatuurwetenschap met een skriptie rond vizuele poëzie in de jaren zestig en zeventig. Ze werkte intussen als vertaalster, lerares Engels en boekenverkoopster.

Als stichtend lid van Krikri vzw is zij medeorganisator van de internationale Krikri festivals omtrent polypoëzie en van verschillende tentoonstellingen, optredens en andere manifestaties rond poëzie en performance.

Helens eigen visuele poëzie maakte deel uit van tentoonstellingen in België, Groot-Brittannië, Nederland, Griekenland, Cyprus, Argentinië, Japan en de VS. Onlangs is werk van haar in twee bloemlezingen verschenen: Zieteratuur (Uitgeverij Passage, Groningen, 2010) en Last Vispo (verschijnt binnenkort). Haar gedicht holding is in 2009 als eerste in een reeks poëzieaffiches bij Paper Kite Press verschenen en er zijn twee kleine boekjes ("chapbooks") van haar visuele poëzie uitgegeven, How to Quote Visual Poetry (Postfluxpost, België, 2010) en een boekje zonder titel in de reeks This is Visual Poetry (Paper Kite, VS, 2010). Ze heeft Stichting Logos tijdens de Gentse Feesten van 2000 voor het eerst ontdekt en zit sindsdien regelmatig tussen het publiek. Na enkele jaren tewerkstelling bij Stichting Logos, werd zij in juli 2013 ontslagen.

Biography (English)

Helen White was born in Kidderminster, England in 1977. She studied French, German and Dutch at the University of Sheffield and moved to Ghent in 2000, initially to teach English conversation at the Mercator Hogeschool. She received her MA in Literature Studies from the K.U. Leuven in 2004 with a thesis on visual poetry in the 1960s and 1970s, and has worked as a translator, English teacher and bookseller.

She is a founding member of the Krikri polypoetry collective, for which she co-organizes the Krikri international polypoetry festivals, various exhibitions and other poetry and performance-related events.

Helens own visual poetry has been shown in exhibitions in Belgium, Britain, the Netherlands, Greece, Cyprus, Argentina, Japan and the US. Recent publications include a contribution to the anthologies Zieteratuur (Uitgeverij Passage, Groningen, 2010) and Last Vispo (forthcoming). Her visual poem holding appeared as the first in a series of poetry posters from Paper Kite Press in 2009 and she has two small visual poetry chapbooks out, How to Quote Visual Poetry (Postfluxpost, Belgium, 2010) and a booklet in the untitled This is Visual Poetry series (Paper Kite, USA, 2010).

She first discovered Logos during the Gentse Feesten in 2000, and has been coming back regularly as an audience member ever since, before taking over as Logos' administrative coordinator in September 2010. In july 2013 she was fired at Logos.
